The Portuguese Stepfather of the 18 year old Yulisa Pérez, whose
body was found semi-buried on the outskirts of Argana Alta last
November, has confessed to the murder. The DNA evidence against
him caused, the Portuguese Bricklayer to brake down in front of
Police and later confessed to the killing before the Judge in Arrecife
last Thursday. Local media are reporting that he had become jealous
of his stepdaughter's new friends that she had made while doing
courses with the Jehovah's Witnesses. He is being held provisionally,

The
tourism industry in Playa Blanca in Lanzarote has been dealt another
body blow by a Canarian court, which has ruled that the resort's
flagship Princess Yaiza Hotel was built illegally. The regions High
Court have upheld a complaint by the Cesar Manrique Foundation against
the planning permission granted by Yaiza town hall for the 660-bed
hotel, which is one of the most luxurious in the Canaries. The Foundation
has long insisted that the council cut corners by granting permission
for several hotels despite the restrictions imposed by the island's
main planning instrument, the PIOT. The ruling could force the demolition
of the hotel and a massive compensation pay-out to the owners.
The Ayuntamiento of Yaiza has agreed to grant a plot of 12,000m²
for the construction of a public secondary school in Playa Blanca.
The agreement was reached in a meeting on the 2nd April between
Gladys Acuña,Yaiza´s mayoress,Yaiza's councillor for town planning,
Leonardo Rodríguez, and Juan Cruz who is the Island's director of
Education. Plans for the expansion of Playa Blanca's primary school
were also agreed

sites of all 17 of Spain's regions and assessed them in terms of
their usability and performance in providing information to the
general public. The Canarian government's web was identified as
requiring major improvement to bring it up to the standard of sites
in the Balearics, Catalonia and Navarre.

Moroccan Sentenced
For Death Of Neil Pearson 26.04.08
A
Moroccan man has been sentenced to ten and a half years prison for
the murder of a British man in Costa Teguise in 2005. Mokhtar Diaouni,
27, was sentenced by a court in Arrecife after being found guilty
of the murder of Neil Pearson, aged 41, on 3rd August 2005. The
court heard that a fight had broken out in a bar in Costa Teguise
after Moroccans had made comments to British women. Diaouni left
the scene of the fight, fetched a kitchen knife from home and returned
to the bar. He stabbed Pearson three times, causing his almost instant
death. The court took Diaouni’s drunken state as a mitigating factor
in the circumstances.
Las Rotundas
Shopping Centre in Fuerteventura - Problems
The
original planning permission for the Las Rotundas shopping centre
in Puerto del Rosario has once again come under the spotlight. It’s
just one month since the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Canarias
ratified the licence’s nullity. The licence dates back to 2002.
More than half the time that was given to sort it out has passed.
The order passed called for the demolition of the parts that don’t
have planning permission. The company was only allowed to build
14.000 square meters but the Consistorio allowed 47,000. The 33,000
extra square metres should be removed. The economics of this would
cost about a million euros out of the municipal coffers. The Current
price per metre in the capital is 1.800 euros, multiplied by 33,000
gives a total of 59,400,000 euros. Economically, knocking down some
of the building is not feasible.
The
Canarian government has approved a special package of measures to
compensate La Gomera for the effects of the fire that has destroyed
almost 1000 hectares in three towns on the island. The aid will be
used to help rebuild homes and other premises damaged in the fire
and to cover the cost of renting accommdoation while repairs are
carried out. The island's farming community will also be compensated
for damage to fields and crops. The fire was brought under control
on Tuesday but has not been officially declared over due to the
possibility that embers might reignite. The Cabildo of Gomera, has
called for a helicopter to be based permanently on the island to
ensure a swifter response to fires in future
